A push bar door is used on fire doors in shops, restaurants, schools and hospitals to provide quick evacuation for members of the public when a fire breaks out. Doors with push bars don’t slow people down, they allow them to exit swiftly and safely.
Doors with double panic bars have one bar which will withdraw the vertical bolts of the first door, and the other will withdraw the latch on the second door. In terms of using the push bar door, it’s simple and there is no specialist training required.
Push Bar Door Mechanisms
Push bar doors use different mechanisms to operate, including:
- Latch mechanism
Similar to how a standard latch works, the push bar door mechanism latch is easy to use. All you need to do is press the handle down to release the latch and the door will open.
There’s usually a single latch in the centre of the door.
- Bolt mechanism
Doors can be secured at the top and bottom with a long bolt going up the side of the door. They use a bolt push bar door mechanism, so when the bar is pushed, the bolts are pulled, allowing the door to open. Bolts can be cut to size to ensure they fit emergency exit doors of all sizes.
